Elizabeth served with OneStory helping to create chronological Bible stories for the Kahani people.  She now travels around the United States sharing about OneStory.  You can listen to the audio of this presentation accompanied by slides.

OneStory is a partnership between Wycliffe Bible Translators, Campus Crusade, Youth With A Mission, TransWorld Radio, and the International Mission Board. Together these organizations work with language groups around the world to provide a set of spoken, chronological Bible stories that people can learn and retell, allowing God’s Word to transform from the inside out!

Abraham's Family

Genesis chapter 22 tells how God tested Abraham by commanding him to sacrifice his only son. But when devoted Abraham lifted his knife to kill Isaac, the angel of the Lord called him by name, saying, “Abraham! Abraham! ... Don’t lay a hand on the boy!”

When Elizabeth and Robin first shared this story with the Kahani people, they said, “Kahani gods never call people by their name.” One person added, “If a god called someone by name, it must mean they have a special relationship with that person.” This story startled the Kahani. Why would an all-powerful God initiate a relationship with a sinful human being?

As Elizabeth and Robin continued working with Kahani storytellers to create Bible stories in the local language, they had many conversations about God and His care for Abraham’s family. During one session, a Kahani storyteller named Hema asked Elizabeth a surprising question: “Are you part of Abraham’s family?”

This question struck Elizabeth as unusual. For her, belonging to God’s family was the important thing. But in Hema’s culture, a person’s identity is rooted in family. Therefore, being in Abraham’s family meant you too were offered this same intimate relationship with God.

Elizabeth told Hema that in a spiritual sense she was indeed part of Abraham’s family, because Christ died for her, making it possible for her to have a personal relationship with God. And she was happy to add that Hema could also join Abraham’s family!
