Bible Translation

If your interest is translation or literacy you'll typically spend half your time with a language project. It may be in a village, town or city. You'll observe their work and participate in daily life. You'll be given opportunities to learn some of the culture and language.

Other Interests

You can get hands-on experience in your area of expertise. You'll spend about half of your time working in computers, education, media, accounting, or other roles that challenge you to use your skills in a cross cultural context while you observe mission work in progress and do some language and culture learning.

GHANA

7 weeks: 14 June–6 August
Cost: non-Ghanaians $4490**
Team of 8 Ghanaians and 8 non-Ghanaians

This team is for individuals who are interested in partnering with African colleagues in the work of Bible translation, adult literacy, and scripture promotion activities.

The Ghana Institute of Linguistics Literacy and Bible Translation ( www.gillbt.org ) will host this team. After a pre-trip online orientation class, the team will begin an experiential field orientation in Ghana, you can then expect about four weeks in your specific ministry assignment with a teammate--followed by a time of field debrief with the whole team.

The opportunities are:

  • Bible translation, linguistics, scripture promotion and literacy work. Your main activities will include learning from and getting to know the local people, experiencing their culture, and learning some of their greetings as you involve yourself in the daily aspects of rural African life. You will have opportunities to observe and serve as you are able and needed in some of the following; tutoring in Hebrew, Greek or biblical history, checking translated scripture portions, basic computer help, ESL, keyboarding data, literacy book production, etc.

Francophone West Africa
Ethnomusicology

6 weeks: June– July
Cost: TBD** Team of 5

While getting to know the local people, you will experience their culture and learn some of their language. After orientation this team will experience ethnomusicology first hand, followed by a time of debriefing. This team will partner with Wycliffe missionaries and African colleagues in support of Bible translation and Scripture-use promotion.

Come on this African trip expecting to be stretched, to learn more about SIL, to experience what ethnomusicology, linguistics, literacy, and support workers lives are actually like, to grow in your faith, to develop relationships with nationals, and to improve your language learning skills.

Other assignments may include:

  • Policy writing/reviewing and researching 
  • Administrative support in the area of tools and materials development for the Arts Consulting/ Scripture Use Department 

Schedule: 

  • Week 1 orientation to organization, culture & language
  • Weeks 2-5 team Ethnomusicology
  • Week 6 debrief, critical inquiry, feedback and assessment

Prerequisites: 

  • Significant previous successful cross-cultural experience 
  • Reasonably fluent in French 
  • Attend a TOTAL It Up
  • Ethnomusicology major/minor or Music major.

Mozambique
Language Documentation and Scripture Access

6 Weeks: 31 May – 9 July 2010

Mozambique is a rapidly developing country in Southern Africa with some of the least-documented languages on the continent. Bible translation is taking place in more than a dozen languages impacting a population of more than five million speakers. This trip will allow you to make an impact on a Bibleless people group even while you explore how your current skills can be used on the field longer term. The trip starts with orientation in Nampula and then the team will divide into 5 or 6 locations for a month of ministry internship. Debrief will be back at the training center in Nampula with opportunities to explore some of local highlights like Ilha de Moçambique, the oldest Portuguese fort in Africa located on an island off the coast of Mozambique.

Team of 10-16 from among:

  • 2-4 Linguistics editing of linguistic papers and data
  • 2 Translation testing & editing
  • 2-4 Teaching, working with Finance/Computers, Publications. Communications
  • 1 Construction/Maintenance
  • 1 Graphic Arts: marketing through CDs, business cards, letterhead, billboards, web design
  • 4-6 Scripture Access: Participating in audio recording, testing and editing
  • 4-6 Language documentation project, pre-field training for this project will be held in Dallas 4 days prior to traveling to Mozambique

*some Portuguese is very helpful on this team; even Spanish would be a plus.

Uganda

Literacy/ Scripture Use Survey

6 weeks: June– July
Cost: TBD** Team of 8 Expatriates

After orientation this team will be trained to survey the scripture use in parts of Uganda in partnership with the Bible Society of Uganda. You will partner with Wycliffe missionaries, Bible Society of Uganda, and African colleagues in support of Bible translation and Scripture Use.

Come on this African trip expecting to be stretched, learn more about SIL and experience what the lives of workers are actually like in linguistics, literacy and support. You will have the opportunity to grow in your faith, develop relationships with nationals and learn about Scripture Use in Uganda.

Other assignments may include:

  • Basic computer training
  • Administrative support in the area of tools and materials development for the Human Resources Department
  • Web design - help build or modify web and intranet sites, and a Google-type add-on with scripture awareness/culture focus

Schedule:

  • Week 1 orientation to organization, culture & language
  • Weeks 2-5 team Scripture use Survey training and deployment
  • Week 6 debrief, critical inquiry, feedback and assessment

Prerequisites:

  • Previous significant, successful cross-cultural experience
  • Attend a TOTAL It Up!
  • Comfort with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher

Papua New Guinea

8 weeks: 8 June – 1 August

Team of 16: 8 Language, 8 Support

Come be a part of what God is doing in the world’s most linguistically diverse nation! Opportunities are bountiful, as you will learn from and work with both expatriate missionaries and Papua New Guineans serving with the PNG Bible Translation Association. After 10 days of orientation and learning some of the trade language, you will serve for four weeks in your area of interest, either in a village or at a missions center. After a week of debrief you will get to sightsee in Australia before heading home.

Language related projects and opportunities exist in the areas of Bible translation, literacy, Scripture Use, language survey and anthropology. Assistance in various workshops and training programs are also possibilities.

Possible Support areas include:
