Community Development

community_ca-IN-ort-54.jpgIn Wycliffe, community development means helping a community and its leaders work together to resolve their problems and achieve their goals through their own initiative. Wycliffe speaks of community development as "intercultural community work."

This type of work requires many skills and specialties covering a wide range of technical and social processes. These may include health, agriculture (from agronomy to animal husbandry), reforestation, water purification and land procurement, among others.

As much as possible, specialists encourage community members to learn to work together to reach their own goals and meet their own needs. Once a community development program is started, community leaders are often able to take over the work, adopting and adapting strategies to meet their community's need and incorporating outside help only when needed.
