In more than 60 countries, the Wycliffe team uses a variety of computer software and systems to tackle such diverse tasks as information management, office automation, specialized linguistic programs, worldwide electronic mail... the list is endless!

So are the ways your God-given talents make a difference. Computer specialists are needed everywhere! Get ready to develop new programs, design systems manuals, troubleshoot hardware and train Wycliffe workers and nationals in the use of computers and software.

Language

Developing language analysis applications including specialty resources such as: Working on a computer

Non-Roman Script Initiative -using computers for non-Roman languages.
Acoustic Speech Analysis - a set of programs assisting linguists in doing phonetic and phonological analysis of speech.
CARLA - a program allowing adaptation of translations to related languages.
Lingualinks - knowledge support system for Bible translation and linguistics, including electronic field manuals.
Field Works - a specific suite of data and applications designed to support SIL language project work. Initial work on these applications has recently begun.
Shoebox - a dictionary-oriented database management program for the field linguist.

Publishing

Publishing Scriptures and literacy materials, scientific articles and public relations literature using such programs as Corel/Ventura, Adobe Photoshop, Fractal Painter, Microsoft Word and in house software. We're using TrueType GX and other cutting edge technology to display and print Roman as well as non-Roman scripts on Windows and Macintosh platforms.

Finance & Personnel

Maintaining financial integrity with our support team through accounting and personnel information management.

Electronic Communication

Working on a computer Our U.S. communication network centers are Dallas, TX; Orlando, FL and Waxhaw, NC. They currently provide email access for more than 6,000 Wycliffe missionaries around the world and the number grows every day. The applications and communications provided through this network are key to our success in Bible translation and literacy by cutting communication time from weeks and months to hours.

Computer & Communications Services

We provide worldwide purchasing and technical support through Computer & Communications Services (CCS) at JAARS in Waxhaw, NC. CCS offers orientation to computer skilled members and training for other members. It supports and revises computer programs that have been developed in our organizations.

Internships

Internship opportunities are available at JAARS as well as at our centers in Dallas, TX and Orlando, FL.

NORMAN & ANGELA QUISUMBING:

For Norman and Angela , the path to service with Wycliffe was not an easy one. Prior to coming to Wycliffe, Norman was a systems engineer working with IT consulting firms in California. One day in their kitchen, Angela and Norman began discussing how they should serve God. At the same time, they both answered, “missions.” But for several years, the idea was put on hold as they juggled the demands of career, family and home.

Tough Times

Then the family faced some heartbreaking losses. Angela suffered a miscarriage and later gave birth to a stillborn baby. Meanwhile, Norman was dealing with frustration and persecution at his job. These trials caused the family to re-evaluate their lives and priorities. What difference were they making in the world? Were their lives headed in the right direction? They began to bring these challenging questions to God, and they sensed a call to missions.

Norman spoke with a trusted elder named Charlie, at North Creek Church in Walnut Creek, California. The two men prayed for guidance for the family. Afterwards, Charlie mentioned that Wycliffe needed IT people. Being a computer guy, Norman visited the website first and then called Wycliffe’s human resources department and spoke with Sue Westrum about his skills. He even fixed a computer problem for her over the phone. Sue told him, “Oh, we could definitely use someone like you!” After being accepted with Wycliffe, the family sold their house and packed their bags.

New Beginnings

Since July 2005, Norman has served in the IT department of Wycliffe USA headquarters in Orlando, Florida. For the Quisumbings, being part of Bible translation has always been a family affair. After 13 years as a stay-at-home mom (part of that time spent home-schooling), Angela now works as a second-grade teacher. She takes part in the Bible translation ministry by supporting Norman and caring for their four children: Nathan, James, Lydia and Lily.

IT Workers Norman and other IT professionals help accelerate Bible translation. They also support the communication and computer needs of Wycliffe workers both overseas and in the US regional offices. Virtually every task relating to Bible translation requires computer support.

The family rejoices knowing they help get Scripture out to people who need it. Norman gives credit to their prayer and financial partners saying, “They are basically working through me and Angela to be involved in Bible translation.”

Why serve in this ministry? Norman answers, “God’s Word is important for salvation—to know Jesus and to know He died for our sins. This is the most important message we can give someone.” His favorite Scripture reflects that motivation: “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes….” (Romans 1:16, NIV).
