Discovery 2008: Benin, Ghana, Solomon Islands, Southeast Asia, Togo

Join us in praying for those participating and those they will encounter.

BENIN Discovery Team 2008

This adventurous team begins their trip in Ghana along with the Ghana Discovery team.  After orientation they will travel by road to Cotonou to serve with Wycliffe Benin depending on the needs of the organization and the abilities and interests of the participants in:

  • Scripture in use
  • Adult literacy
  • English teaching
  • Computer training
  • New Testament translation

Prerequisites:
        • Good French communication
        • Significant previous successful cross-cultural experience
        • Attend TOTAL It Up or Explore Wycliffe 

7 weeks, summer, Ages: 21*-35, Cost: $4100**, Team of 2 Expatriates +
2 Ghanaians. The trip will conclude by debriefing with the Ghana Discovery team.

GHANA DISCOVERY TEAM 2008

 

The Ghana Institute of Linguistics, Literacy and Bible Translation (Wycliffe Ghana) will host this team. While getting to know the local people, they will
experience their culture and learn some of their language as they participate
in the daily life of the village.  After orientation in Ghana, this team will spend about four weeks in each person's specific ministry assignment followed by a time of debriefing. This team will partner with African colleagues in:

  • Bible translation
  • Adult literacy
  • Scripture-use promotion
They may also have the opportunity to serve in some of the following areas:
  • tutoring in Hebrew or Biblical history
  • checking translated Scripture portions
  • basic computer help
  • teaching English
  • literacy promotion
  • women's development 
  • church mobilization
  • communication, design, marketing
  • planning, finance, administration support

Prerequisites:
        • Significant previous successful cross-cultural experience
        • Attend a TOTAL It Up or Explore Wycliffe

7 weeks, June-August, Ages: 21*-35, Cost: $3990**, Team of 6 Expatriates + 6 Ghanaians

SOLOMON ISLANDS DISCOVERY TEAM 2008


This team is expecting to grow cross-culturally as they minister Bible study skills in partnership with
Solomon Islanders.  They will also celebrate the Pijin and Natggu Bible dedications and witness the joy
that comes after years of translation, literacy, and Scripture use work

They are a mix of team members with skills or interests in:
        • translation, linguistics, literacy
        • teaching, preaching
        • ethnomusicology, music, dance, drama
        • admininistration, team finance
        • videography, photography

Weeks 1 & 2Team orientation in Dallas, TX. Once in the Solomon Islands, they will continue studying the Pijin language and culture in the Solomon Islands' capital city of Honiara.
Weeks 3 & 4Attend the Pijin Bible dedication on the 30th anniversary of Solomon Island's independence. They will also learn about Scripture Application and Leadership Training (SALT) lessons in Pijin
Weeks 5-7On the remote island of Santa Cruz Island, they will attend the Natqgu New Testament dedication and teach SALT immediately following the dedication. Then they will help distribute the Natqgu New Testaments around the island with the translation team.
Week 8After traveling back to Honiara, the team will attend a debriefing at a beautiful seaside location before returning to the US.

        • love people
        • able to rough it
        • willing to grow in public speaking
        • considering longer-term missions possibly in the Pacific area
        • willing to help where needed

 8 weeks, June–August, Ages: 21*-35, Cost: $ 4600**, Team of 6-10

SOUTHEAST ASIA DISCOVERY TEAM 2008


Involving the team in relationship with the unreached in this part of the world is the focus of this trip. 
Week 1           Meet your team for orientation and for language and culture learning in an experiential "hands on" approach.
Weeks 2-3       Live with a national family practicing the language and other things you learned in orientation.   
Weeks 4-6                 Intern in the area(s) of your skills and interests.  Translation interns are assigned to a village language project and other interns are assigned to one of the regional centers.
Week 7     Debrief and process the experiences of your trip with your team in a beautiful location.

Areas for internship:

  • translation, literacy, teaching use of scripture, teaching English
  • anthropology, community development, aviation
  • IT: software and hardware problem solving
  • photography/videography
  • administration/finance (i.e. accounting)
  • other opportunities

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum of 1 year experience learning a foreign language
  • Attend TOTAL It Up

4 Nationals

Togo/Benin DISCOVERY TEAM 2008


This team will be involved observing, learning and serving with a field Ethnomusicologist who is researching traditional music genres used in worship in southern Benin. They may also be involved in some song writing workshops and report writing.  People on this team were chosen
for their flexibility, helpful spirit and for being self starters.

Prerequisites:

20 May–8 July, 2008, Ages: 21*-35, Focus on Ethnomusicology
