 GET GLOBAL 2008: MexicoSoutheast Asia, SudanGuatemala

Mexico

3 weeks, 28 June - 15 July, Ages: 15-23, Cost: $1,800

Participants will be experiencing the culture of the mountain regions in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico as they work with the Zapotec people.

Mexico-Man with BibleAfter spending time in Oaxaca acclimating to the language and culture, the team will travel to a Zapotec village where they will live for the next five days:

  • building relationships with their host families
  • learning some of the Zapotec language
  • experiencing translation work
  • providing English language workshops

Then, the team will travel to the Wycliffe Center in Mitla to visit with personnel there, asking them questions and experiencing life at the center.  Finally, they'll tour the old city of Mitla and visit a Zapotec weaving village on the way back to Oaxaca.

Southeast Asia

3 weeks, 7 June - 1 July, Ages: 15-23, Approximate Cost: $3,800

This Southeast Asian nation is home to perhaps the world's greatest diversity of cultures and languages. Another world religion is predominant in this land, although Christians are in the majority in the area where the team is going. 

Culture-Making DinnerOrientation begins in the mountains in a farming area where the team will be introduced to the culture and way of life.

  • They will see different aspects of translation work
  • Witness Bible translation underway where several language groups are still without Scriptures in the language they understand best
  • Spend time studying the language, culture, and meeting people in the village

Sudan

3 weeks, 13 July - 4 August, Ages: 18-23, Approximate Cost: $3,700

After orientation in Waxhaw, North Carolina, this trip will begin with a stop in Entebbe, Uganda.

Village in SudanFrom there the team will go to Juba, Sudan, where they will:

  • Learn about the work of SIL, the Summer Institute of Linguistics, in Sudan
  • Observe mother-tongue translators at work
  • Practice some local colloquial Arabic phrases

While in Sudan, they'll spend time with the Keliko people:

  • sharing in their everyday life
  • learning their language and culture
  • meeting members of the Keliko team
  • encouraging use of the newly published Keliko Scriptures: Genesis, Luke and Acts

Guatemala

3 weeks, 15 June - 5 July, Ages: 15-23, Approximate Cost: $1,900

This team will experience the culture while witnessing the impact of translation on the people of Guatemala:

  • After orientation in Orlando, the team will fly to Guatemala City, where they will learn about the Mayan culture and tour Antigua, the colonial capital of the region.
  • In Huehuetenango, they'll meet missionaries who are helping established churches grow and become sending churches.
  • Next at San Miguel Acata'n, they'll live with K'anjob'al families--working, visiting, and eating with them.  The team will also learn some of the K'anjob'al language as they interact with K'anjob'al people and the veteran translator.
  • Finally, they'll visit the Zaculeo ruins and Lake Atitlan, where Wycliffe founder, William Cameron Townsend, used to work.
