Talk With Us
“Overall, what amazes me is what the Lord is doing. I could not have thought up these things that are happening, but He has chosen me to be here and join with what He is doing at this time. People keep telling me none of this would be happening were we not here.” —David Wake, ServeInPNG member

There is a tremendous need for Bible translators and support personnel worldwide. Come join us in Papua New Guinea (PNG) for one to two years or more, to discover how God could use you to help the people of Papua New Guinea receive God’s Word in their heart language.

  • Live, serve and fellowship together as a multicultural, multi-denominational mission community centered on the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • Help not only with translated Scripture, but also the inward development of whole and effective people who will positively impact the church and society at large.
  • Serve alongside Papua New Guineans, helping them to see their nation empowered by the written Word.

Are you ready to take a leap of faith, live on the edge, and serve God in Papua New Guinea? Are you available to meet an ever-increasing need for help in Papua New Guinea?Group of people walking on a trail

ServeInPNG members can serve in a number of capacities, depending upon their personal desires and needs in the office there. Each track provides opportunity for as diverse an experience as the member is willing and able to undertake.

OUR CURRENT TRACKS ARE:

  • Advocate for Local Languages
  • Computer and Technical Assistant
  • Scripture-Use Assistant
  • Literacy Assistant
  • Training Course Assistant

A volunteer that completes the training requirements for a given track will then be able to serve in an area specific to his or her skills. Training requirements will be addressed on a per-case basis, according to individual needs, with the consultation of the ServeInPNG Coordinator.

Advocate for Local Languages

Some Papua New Guineans desire to continue work on a new translation program after an SIL* team has left. Many of these men and women are waiting for volunteers who can connect them with training programs and resources available through SIL.

Serving as an advocate for local languages, you can assist national translators with planning, organization, fundraising and communicating with SIL personnel.

Computer and Technical Assistant

Computer & Tech AsstSIL* has pioneered the use of technical tools like Adapt-It translation software and AlphaSmart computers, which speed the work of Bible translation. But national translators often lack the training needed to use these powerful tools.

Serving as a computer and technical assistant, you can train translators in the use of software and hardware, assist with setting up of equipment, or help with data entry for dictionary development.

Scripture-Use Assistant

Many of Papua New Guinea’s peoples now have the New Testament in their own languages but do not know how to use or study it effectively. Translation is not enough. Papua New Guineans must also understand the importance of applying Scripture and must be equipped to do it well.

Serving as a Scripture-use assistant, you can help in planning, organizing, preparing and presenting Scripture-use courses in villages and schools throughout PNG.

Literacy AssistantSIU STEP-Literacy

In order to use the Scriptures effectively, Papua New Guineans need adequate education in their mother tongue. National literacy workers promote mother-tongue education, but they themselves need training to accomplish this task.

Serving as a literacy assistant, you can assist SIL* and Papua New Guinean teachers who train national literacy workers, and you may be able to assist directly with teaching and village visits.

Training Course Assistant

SIL* provides training to Papua New Guineans in a broad spectrum of translation and literacy subject areas. These students come to the SIL center, often traveling far from home, and need personal and practical care as they learn.

Serving as a training course assistant, you can come alongside SIL course instructors in their specific needs—ranging from mentoring to meal preparation.

 * What is SIL-PNG? When you go to Papua New Guinea, you will work with one of Wycliffe’s partnering organizations, SIL-PNG. SIL-PNG is a partnership of men and women from all over the world who work to translate the Scriptures, promote literacy and equip Papua New Guineans to see their nation empowered by the written Word.
