Column >Need for Bilingual Teachers The Unique Need For Bilingual Teachers Recently there has been an increase in the number of missionaries from Korea serving as bible translators. With this increase has been an urgent and unique need for bilingual teachers. Korean North Americans who are proficient in both Korean and English are needed to teach and help the children of Korean missionaries. First, since they have grown up most of their lives in America or Canada they have been able to gain a cross-cultural perspective, which is needed to relate to missionary kids. MKs for their part have experienced so many different cultures that they do not identify themselves to only one. In the same way, Korean North Americans have learned two different cultures, speaking Korean at home and English outside the home. Most Korean MKs will return to Korea to receive higher education. As a result they must be adequately equipped in speaking Korean. Korean North Americans who are efficient in Korean can assist children in this area. Efforts have been made to alleviate the demand for bilingual teachers by the Korean North American Mobilization Office at Orlando in Florida. We have sent out tutors for the summer to teach Korean language and Korean history. These tutors not only teach academics but also has also served in befriending kids who sometimes feel displaced by all the people they meet and all the places they visit. Every year five families have asked for tutors but unfortunately we have not been able to meet their needs. If you think the Lord is calling you in this area, please contact us, whether your interest is short term or lifetime. Call 1-888-567-5336 |
