Marie, a mother living in Southeast Asia, prayed to her ancestors’ gods, asking them to help her son who was going blind. She sacrificed animals to appease the spirits. But in the end, her son lost his sight and Marie lost her faith. Suddenly Marie felt alone.
In her small mountain village, Marie was like so many other young mothers who struggled with their faith. “I didn’t get any hope from my own religion, so I looked for comfort and strength elsewhere,” recalled Marie. “It was Jomi, a nearby Bible translator, who told me that serving false gods was meaningless and that only the living God could help me.”
As Jomi explained the gospel — Christ’s ultimate sacrifice for the sins of humanity — to this grieving mother, something miraculous occurred. “I wanted to follow God!” Marie proclaimed.
When Marie decided to follow Jesus, she was rejected by other villagers. The local leaders persecuted her. People tried to force her out of the village. When Marie’s father passed away, even her own brother refused to let her attend the funeral due to her religious beliefs. Yet she only grew stronger in her faith.
“I depended on God, whatever happened,” said Marie. “I felt that I had heard the calling of God. That is why I was so strong.”
Marie began spreading the gospel to her family and friends. Eventually a home church was established in the village and it was named for a word in the local language that means “salvation.” Now more and more people follow Jesus.
Marie reflected: “If I had not trusted in Jesus and been strong in my faith, I doubt that there would be any church in my home village and that my family would have found Jesus.” She concluded: “Now I am happy. I have this inner light and hope. Eternal life is waiting for me and I will be able to enjoy it with my family.”
The translated gospel transforms lives. But there are so many people just like Marie who have yet to meet Jesus and learn of his extraordinary sacrifice for them.
With your help today, people around the world can experience the same hope and salvation that Marie has. Your gift will help provide Scripture for people groups around the world in a language they think in, dream in and pray in.
Please prayerfully consider how you can invest in seeing more lives transformed as they receive the Good News of Jesus through the translated Word.
