“I was nearly buried alive on the day I was born,” Mário said.
That’s what typically happens to babies born out of wedlock in Mário’s culture. But Mário’s family took pity on him and spared his life, choosing to break with cultural norms.
Still, not everyone within Mário’s Paypa community accepted him. He had a difficult childhood and was treated like an outsider by some people. He felt abandoned and alone. In his shame and anger, Mário turned to alcohol, drugs and fighting.
But nothing seemed to heal the hurt within him.
By the grace of God, Mário met a Christian teacher and her husband who shared Bible stories with him. As Mário heard these stories, he was shocked and delighted to know that there was a God who loved him, died for him and wanted Mário to be a part of his family!
“I met the Lord Jesus and the deliverance available through his name,” Mário said. “I understood deep truths of the gospel.”
Mário went from hopelessness to new life because of God’s Word! Today he’s translating Scripture for his people so that others may know the gospel too.
Easter brings immense joy and hope; Jesus lived, died and was resurrected so that we could have new life! 1 Peter 1:3a tells us: “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. …” (NLT).
We celebrate the hope of Easter, knowing — just like Mário knows now — that we have a loving, eternal Father who invites us into his family through salvation through Jesus Christ.
Will you be a part of bringing this joy to others?
