Every Christian mother and father longs to see their children encounter Jesus and learn to follow Him.

For Cherita (picture changed), that hope became reality in a remarkable way.

After joining a literacy class in her community in Togo, Cherita began reading passages from the Akebu New Testament. Each day after class, her son Edem (picture changed) would sit beside her and listen as she read Scripture aloud.

One day as they were reading together, they came to Ephesians 6:1: 

“Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do” (NLT).

Until that day, Edem had struggled to control his temper. But the familiar words — because they were read in his own language — captured Edem’s mind and heart.

Supported by his mother’s encouragement, Edem found that the verse made a difference in his life. With Ephesians 6:1 planted firmly in his heart, he began to control his temper and his tongue.

Cherita could see the impact of even one verse of Scripture on her son: "Now, I see that he is changing," she said.
