Since 1997, the Lunsfords’ central calling in West Asia has been making God’s Word accessible to the Lotari people for personal transformation.

 

Their early years focused on foundational work—helping the community develop a writing system and equipping locals to lead mother-tongue literacy programs for children and adults, particularly women. Simultaneously, Wayne and Valerie co-founded a northern training center with another couple to strengthen leadership and skills across multiple language groups.

 

Wayne served as founding director for the first decade, while Valerie managed finances. Beyond literacy, the center equipped participants in language revitalization, dictionary development, and translation. Much of the preparation for the Lotari program and similar initiatives happened there. The center still serves northern communities and will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2027.

 

After nearly thirty years of partnership, the Lotari community now has Scripture-based stories in their language. These span from Creation through Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Job, and Ruth, culminating in the life of Jesus. Two digital apps provide access—one dedicated to Ruth and another covering the narrative from Adam and Eve through Christ.

 

In mid-2025, Wayne became Regional Director, leading a multinational team of over 60 people serving in complex West Asian contexts.

 

Valerie remains deeply invested in the spiritual and emotional health of her teammates. She meets online with colleagues for spiritual accompaniment and contemplative prayer groups. She also hosts several annual spiritual formation retreats in their home, providing space for rest, reflection, and renewed attentiveness to God.
