With tropical beachlines, snow‑covered mountains, deserts and vast grasslands — Colombia is known to be a land of extremes! The northwest part of the country actually serves as a connecting point between Central and North America.
The Wiwa people live at the base of a mountain range near Colombia’s northern border. The Wiwa are mostly farmers who live in small communities that are somewhat isolated from the outside world. But even as the world around them changes, the Wiwa are passionate about their own language, Damana, and having Scripture in it!
The Wiwa are currently waiting for access to all of God’s Word, but it’s slowly being translated into Damana. As they engage with Damana Scriptures, their lives are transformed! During the recent translation of Luke, eight Damana speakers decided to follow Jesus! And as the team works hard to produce Acts, they look forward to that number increasing. The community is already inspired by the portions of Scripture they have access to in Damana. They’re using the Book of Acts and other Scripture materials to discuss what it means to be a disciple of Jesus.
Since spiritual matters are communicated orally in Wiwa tradition, translators will also be working to record Scripture into an audio format. This will allow those who are unable to read to have access to God’s Word.
Praise God that his Spirit is already transforming Damana speakers! God continues to use your prayers to impact the Wiwa people for his glory.
Make a Prayer Connection: Ask God to provide all of the funding needed for this project to translate Scripture into the language of the Deaf in Colombia.
