There are currently about 300 people groups in Papua New Guinea without any Scripture in a language they can understand. Consequently, there is an urgent need for a team of people to support this endeavor, and the Johnson family is a vital part of that team.
From 2016-2026, Derek taught math and wood shop at Ukarumpa International School's Secondary School (UIS) where the children of translators and staff can earn a fully accredited high school diploma. Kristy served as the Clinic Manager at the Ukarumpa Clinic, that cares for missionaries and Papua New Guineans. The Ukarumpa Clinic provides compassionate care to all, helping them to thrive in their life and ministry. Together, their mission was to make the job of the translators easier by taking care of them and their families.
Since returning to Minnesota in July 2026, they are seeking a new support role within the Bible translation movement.
Their grown sons, Grant, Nate, and Trent, are transitioning into adulthood after graduating from UIS.

Wycliffe establishes a Ministry Budget for its members to reflect recurring expenses related to family factors and their geographic location of service. Giving to Wycliffe directly impacts members' ability to begin and remain in their assignment.
This monthly budget covers ministry-related expenses, insurance and retirement, social security and taxes, and Wycliffe administrative costs. The remainder is what the members receive as "take-home pay" for their daily living expenses.
