Nur lived in a community in southwestern Ethiopia where Christians were often not accepted. They were persecuted, and their houses were even burned to the ground. But God had called Nur to help finish the job of translating the New Testament for the Seze people. Despite opposition, the Spirit was at work preparing even the hardest of hearts to receive God’s Word.
One of those hearts belonged to Ali, a man who seemed to despise the gospel. He was well known for tormenting Christians in the community. No one dared to speak to him about Jesus. Then one night that all began to change.
Ali dreamed of a man dressed in white who said, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” It was a dream Ali tried to forget because he knew the man was Jesus. But he couldn’t ignore it any longer.
So Ali began secretly attending a church in another community to learn more about Jesus. There a courageous believer took him under his wing and explained the Scriptures to him. Ali chose to follow Christ.
As a result, Ali and his family were attacked by their neighbors and driven from their community. But Ali felt God’s call to share the Good News of Jesus, and led 30 people to Christ. After that, Ali joined Nur on the Seze translation team.
“I can’t wait until I can hold the full Seze Bible in my hands as I talk to my community about Jesus,” Ali said.
Tragically, earlier this year both Nur and Ali were killed by those who oppose Christianity. But the translation team is not stopping their work until the job is finished. They’ve seen how God is using his Word to proclaim the hope of the gospel and bring others to faith in Jesus — just like Ali.
When Saul of Tarsus met Jesus on the road to Damascus, he was transformed from a persecutor of Christians to a martyr for the name of Christ, and that power is still at work in Ethiopia. You can be part of this Spirit-led movement by helping translate God’s Word in Ethiopia and around the world.
Through your gift today, you’ll come alongside the courageous team in Ethiopia as they further the work of God’s Kingdom.
