Imagine growing up in a place other than the U.S. or Canada. You’ve always believed in spirits that exist in rivers and trees. You also believe that spirits of dead ancestors are hanging about.

But someone has come along with a book called a “Bible,” and it has stories about beings called “angels.” You’ve never heard of such a thing before. What are angels? What are they like?

Now imagine you have been asked to help translate the Bible into your own language. You’ve learned that angels are different than the spirits you’ve known all your life, but you really don’t know how angels fit into the world.

Steve’s current task is to find a way to explain angels and other key Biblical concepts to these translators. There is already a book out on key Biblical terms, and it has been widely used for many years. But it’s out of date, and the number of terms it covers is somewhat limited. Steve has identified more than a hundred concepts that should be explained. Writing them up will keep him busy for some time.

Steve also works on key Biblical terms with the Spoken English Bible (SEB) team. The SEB is on the cutting edge of research for a translation approach called oral translation.

Debbie spends about half her time caring for grandchildren, and lately she has been caring for a foster grandchild, too. But she continues to be a Life Coach. It’s not unusual to see her on a video call in the evenings, Friday, or Saturday. Nor is it unusual for her to meet with someone for coffee. She works with Dallas International University (DIU) students, former DIU students, and missionaries.

DIU does not pay Debbie or any other staff for their work. DIU is a missions school run by missionaries. Debbie does Life Coaching as her missionary service.
