The Woki people number around 170,000 and live scattered among the coral islands and littoral areas of eastern Indonesia where they live primarily from fishing and working in and around the water. They’ve been animists for most of their history but became Muslim in the last two hundred years. Now some local Christians have begun to share the gospel with them but they have no resources from Scripture available in the Woki language.
Samuel*, a Woki* Muslim background believer has begun to translate stories from the Gospels into his language to strengthen his personal evangelism efforts. He has requested help with training, technical support and quality assurance.
This project aims to support Samuel in his initial translation efforts and build a solid foundation for future translation and scripture engagement by:
1) Providing Samuel with initial training and mentoring (Paratext, translation principles and community checking, SE strategies, audio recording, etc.)
2) Connecting Samuel with helpful resources (exegetical resources, linguistic and translation consultants, app developers, etc.).
3) Encouraging Samuel to recruit other Woki speakers to join a future translation team.
4) Result in the production of some chapters from Matthew, Mark, and Luke that can be recorded and shared by evangelists.
