Aighon Translation
Sprawling through the Whiteman Mountains of West New Britain in Papua New Guinea are our Aighon-speaking brothers and sisters in Christ, waiting to read God’s word in their language. Within this remote location are more than 15 villages and two church denominations (Anglican and Evangelical) which make up this unique language community that strongly desires to have the holy Scriptures in their language.
When the Duhe family first read about the Aighon people their hearts were broken for this people group that had had a translator back in 2010, but then became a vacated project. They had gotten a taste for the Word in their own language and wanted more but had been waiting now for another 10 years for a team to come help them.
The Duhes made first contact in 2018 and immediately knew this was where they were supposed to go. Delayed by schooling needs and COVID, they were not able to make it out to the village again until 2021. Their first trip out as a family blew them away as the two church denominations had already formed a translation committee, nominated translators and were ready to get to work. They have continued to diligently work since that first trip and continue to surpass all expectations with the high quality and quantity of work. This project is already 2 years ahead of its originally projected timeline!
Over the next couple of the years, the Duhe family hopes to get fully established in the village and to be able to spend 4-5 months of the year in the village. The goals for the first few years are to get the team fully set up to work electronically with computers, language software, and the equipment for communicating remotely as needed. Workshops will also be run in the village to collect their stories and to collect additional language data that will assist in having the orthography officially recognized. Already over six books of Bible, Old and New Testament, have already been drafted and there is hope to begin the many layers of quality checking soon!
Thank you for prayerfully considering partnering with Wycliffe, the Duhe family, and the Aighon people through your financial and prayer partnership with the Aighon Translation project.
