Pouye New Testament, Papua New Guinea
“Let’s make a holiday for honoring the impact of God’s Word in our language!” blurted Simon, a leader in the community and translation team member to the sound of applause. Pouye Day was born that very hour, and each year the Pouye come together in honor of the continual impact of God’s Word as each new book of the Bible is translated into their language, recorded in audio format, and distributed in both oral and written forms.
For over twenty years the Pouye have diligently translated the Pouye Scriptures. Portions of Genesis, Exodus, as well as the books of Jonah and Ruth have already been translated and published. The books of Mark, Acts, James and Titus have been drafted, and a draft of John is currently in progress. However, they have also faced many setbacks. The lack of education opportunities for most people in the remote Pouye villages has made the complexity of Bible translation very challenging, and low literacy rates continue to also make it difficult for many to read and understand the translated Scriptures.
The Pouye New Testament Project is an answer to these challenges. Many of these Scriptures are now recorded in audio format, with more to go; and it is primarily through community and private hearings of these Scriptures that lives continue to be transformed and people are getting excited about seeing their New Testament completed. Therefore, the community has asked for ongoing training of local translators and audio/literacy specialists to speed production and maximize the distribution and impact of God’s Word in their community.
Thank you for considering partnering in Bible translation with Wycliffe and the Pouye community through your financial and prayer partnership of the Pouye New Testament project.
